SC Johnson (you know, the company that makes a boatload of cleaning products…some of which you probably own) is sponsoring a neighborhood “Clean-Up Makeover” for one lucky Baltimore community. And Pigtown is one of three communities being considered — but you have to vote! Click here, scroll down to vote…and vote for Pigtown!

Seriously, you guys - I’m not going to fall or jump from my window. There’s a big ledge — very wide. No need to panic when you see me sitting on the windowsill….I promise.
So of course yesterday I posted that it’s been pretty quiet in the ‘hood…of course today that changed. Nothing terrible happened, but as I was sitting in the window this evening, I saw a totally nude man drive by. Yes, nekkid. From tip to toe, if you will. And it wasn’t a pretty sight, believe me. So that’s my big excitement for the day — that and the fact that I got my hair cut. Sigh…
Oh, and I vacuumed and cleaned out the catbox. I know…you’re jealous of all this excitement. Try to contain yourself. :p
Tags: catbox crap, household chores, naked people, Pigtown, the 'hood, window sitting, wootEvelyn’s is now open at 6:30 on weekday mornings. Yes, you read that correctly — 6:30. I started that today, and honestly it wasn’t that bad — it’s only an extra hour, and the weekend hours haven’t changed. Plus it’s kind of nice being up and about when the neighborhood is quiet. Could it be that I am turning into a morning person?
I’ve brought back the chicken salad sandwich…on a bagel. People seem to like it, so I’m sticking with that. I’m also baking like crazy — this weekend’s treats are going to be fun. Stay tuned for that.
Not much happening in the ‘hood these days…it’s been mighty quiet.
Tags: baking, coffee, Evelyn's, mornings, Pigtown, sandwichesIf you see a guy in Pigtown going door to door selling magazines, DO NOT let him in or anywhere near your house. He stopped by the cafe a few minutes ago, and would NOT take no for an answer…and the whole thing seemed like a scam anyway. Once he realised I was NOT about to buy any of his goddam magazines, he started behaving in an erratic manner…so I called the police. So far they are nowhere to be found, but perhaps that will change.
The guy — his name is “Jeremiah”. Black male, 20s, 6 feet tall (give or take an inch or two), wearing a white shirt, dark jeans, and sneakers. Total nutjob. He also tells a long tale about being from New Orleans and losing everything because of Katrina. I’m hoping that’s true and he didn’t make it up to play on peoples’ sympathies, and I’m sorry about all of that, but it’s not a good sales pitch. Really.
Update: Police showed up, and the guy decided to argue with the police officer…who wasn’t buying his story (and I doubt the officer bought any magazines…) so the officer told him to get lost or go to jail. And if the guy comes back to the neighborhood…if anyone sees him and calls the police…he’s off to jail. I hope he never comes back. Freak. And the last I saw him, he was headed towards Ridgely’s.

They’re especially fun if you’ve ever been to Sid’s Tavern.

Tonight I’m on the couch watching TV, minding my own business mind you, and someone’s outside yelling at someone else about tipping over their “damn chicken dinner” inside the trunk of the car. Why one would travel with a plate of chicken and some greens in the trunk of one’s car — I have no clue. But then to get mad when it tips over, well damn, what did you think would happen?
I had to yell at them to shut the hell up about the damn chicken, otherwise they would have kept it going for hours. I could tell it would have been one of those drawn out endless fights…and hell no, not during my quiet time was I about to listen to people argue about some G-D chicken.
Jesus, and it’s only Tuesday.

At one point, I counted 11 firefighters on the roof of two houses, trying to put out what was left of the blaze. These photos were taken from the back of a house on James Street — the fire was so hot, the siding on the back of three houses actually melted and buckled.
Apparently one of the houses was being used as a squat by addicts, and the other two were vacant. One had been recently rehabbed and was on the market — hope that guy has insurance.
Never a dull moment here…
Tags: house fire, Pigtown, Sargent StreetHaven’t written anything of substance in ages — sorry for that. Been busy with work…and life…and the neighborhood.
Some random updates:
1. I have moved. I now live in the apartment above the cafe — I love being here in the middle of everything, and the space is wonderful. I still have some boxes that need to be unpacked and some that need to be moved to the basement, but I’m otherwise settled in.
2. I’m thinking about having a party. Soon. Stay tuned.
3. I received an email yesterday from someone who was decidedly not happy with me or my cafe. Some of the points were certainly valid, although any time you preface statements with “I hear you don’t like to take advice…” — well, yes I do like advice. Constructive criticism is fine. Ripping me a new one is not. Nor is questioning my commitment to my business or the neighborhood. If you know me well enough to say these things, engage me in an actual conversation, not a one-sided diatribe. But I did appreciate some of what the person had to say, if not the delivery.
4. Looks like Spring is here. Maybe. Time to open the patio soon — I need new plants. Besides herbs (which I plant every year anyway) — I’m looking for some hardy perennials that would do well in a mixed sun/shade area. Suggestions, please?
5. I still haven’t bought any curtains for the apartment. I need to do this. I also need some storage solutions for the bathroom — there’s space under the sink, but that’s about it. Oh and I have one of those things that hooks over the showerhead…but I need more storage. Ideas?
6. I’ve been baking a lot lately — today I have some butterscotch fudge bars — it’s a new recipe…and damn good.
There’s a Pigtown Happy Hour this Friday at Carroll Station.
Tags: email, Pigtown, random shiz, storageIf you haven’t been there already and you live in the neighborhood, you have to try Carroll Station. A bar and restaurant, they serve Jamaican and American food, and their drink prices are reasonable. The last time I was there, I had the brown stew fish (whole red snapper, and they have other fish to choose from), the rice & peas, fried plantains, and more than a couple of beers — my tab was no more than $30. The food was authentic (thank GOD for authentic Jamaican food in the neighborhood!!) and the fish was perfectly cooked. The meal came with a salad — I highly recommend the house dressing. Very spicy, and addicting.
It’s a great place to meet your neighbors and have a nice meal/drink at the same time!

And everyone’s fine with everyone else, and the whole thing just works.
