Beware The Crazy Magazine Guy

If you see a guy in Pigtown going door to door selling magazines, DO NOT let him in or anywhere near your house. He stopped by the cafe a few minutes ago, and would NOT take no for an answer…and the whole thing seemed like a scam anyway. Once he realised I was NOT about to buy any of his goddam magazines, he started behaving in an erratic manner…so I called the police. So far they are nowhere to be found, but perhaps that will change.

The guy — his name is “Jeremiah”. Black male, 20s, 6 feet tall (give or take an inch or two), wearing a white shirt, dark jeans, and sneakers. Total nutjob. He also tells a long tale about being from New Orleans and losing everything because of Katrina. I’m hoping that’s true and he didn’t make it up to play on peoples’ sympathies, and I’m sorry about all of that, but it’s not a good sales pitch. Really.

Update: Police showed up, and the guy decided to argue with the police officer…who wasn’t buying his story (and I doubt the officer bought any magazines…) so the officer told him to get lost or go to jail. And if the guy comes back to the neighborhood…if anyone sees him and calls the police…he’s off to jail. I hope he never comes back. Freak. And the last I saw him, he was headed towards Ridgely’s.

Pigtown Videos

Jeez these are hillarious. You “Washington Village” folks can skip this post.

They’re especially fun if you’ve ever been to Sid’s Tavern.

Bye, Bye, “b”

So I decided to give the Baltimore Sun’s offshoot “b” a chance. That is, until I read this childish excuse for an editorial. (Sorry if the link takes you directly to my comment…scroll up for the “editorial”.)

I can’t believe they even print that kind of trash. What kind of person makes up vulgar names for a homeless woman and her little girl? Jesus God. Move the fuck back to Columbia and be done with it.

Another Pigtown Moment

I have so many of these, someday I should write a book.

Tonight I’m on the couch watching TV, minding my own business mind you, and someone’s outside yelling at someone else about tipping over their “damn chicken dinner” inside the trunk of the car. Why one would travel with a plate of chicken and some greens in the trunk of one’s car — I have no clue. But then to get mad when it tips over, well damn, what did you think would happen?

I had to yell at them to shut the hell up about the damn chicken, otherwise they would have kept it going for hours. I could tell it would have been one of those drawn out endless fights…and hell no, not during my quiet time was I about to listen to people argue about some G-D chicken.

Jesus, and it’s only Tuesday.

Like A House On Fire…

Except it was three houses. In the neighborhood, on Sargent Street. Some bad photos taken with my phone:

House Fire Pigtown

House Fire Pigtown

House Fire Pigtown

House Fire Pigtown

At one point, I counted 11 firefighters on the roof of two houses, trying to put out what was left of the blaze. These photos were taken from the back of a house on James Street — the fire was so hot, the siding on the back of three houses actually melted and buckled.

Apparently one of the houses was being used as a squat by addicts, and the other two were vacant. One had been recently rehabbed and was on the market — hope that guy has insurance.

Never a dull moment here…

Hungry?

If you haven’t been there already and you live in the neighborhood, you have to try Carroll Station.  A bar and restaurant, they serve Jamaican and American food, and their drink prices are reasonable.  The last time I was there, I had the brown stew fish (whole red snapper, and they have other fish to choose from), the rice & peas, fried plantains, and more than a couple of beers — my tab was no more than $30.  The food was authentic (thank GOD for authentic Jamaican food in the neighborhood!!) and the fish was perfectly cooked.  The meal came with a salad — I highly recommend the house dressing.  Very spicy, and addicting.

It’s a great place to meet your neighbors and have a nice meal/drink at the same time!

Only In Pigtown…

…could you go to a coffeehouse, sit next to three Colonial Dames from Mt. Clare and listen to Motorhead at the same time.

And everyone’s fine with everyone else, and the whole thing just works.

Many Thanks

…especially to JJT for the loan of his Linux laptop.  I always wanted to be more proficient in Linux…so now’s my big chance.  It certainly feels better having access to the Super-Tuberwebs at home.

But I would like to thank everyone who’s come by the cafe or left comments in my blog — this has certainly been a Month of Shit for me…so your well wishing has done a lot of good.  I still have a lot of hope for the neighborhood.

So Many Things To Do…

…and such little freakin time.  GAAH.

I’m moving March 1st to a wonderful 2-bedroom apartment over the cafe.  Talk about an easy commute…!  But between now and then, I’m overwhelmed with the amount of stuff that needs to be done/packed/moved out to the Goodwill.  Yikes.

Feeling slightly better after the burglary, but I still haven’t had the usual “Hurricane Carol” reaction.  It will probably come out at a most inappropriate moment, and so be it.  I’m starting to get back some of the music I lost and this time I’m burning it to CDs, dammit.

Otherwise…life is good.
