WTF, Part 3

At the risk of sounding completely politically incorrect….does anyone else here think it’s ironic that in 2006 the US Air Force paid almost $800,000 to a company called Friends of the Retarded?  Yeah…really.

An Update

So as I was sitting at the water’s edge the other day, I realized I hadn’t updated my blog in a while.  I tend to spend most of my lunch hours sitting by the water — it’s a short walk from the office, and it’s so beautiful.  I have a perfect view of the Domino Sugar factory and the boats coming in and out of the dock behind Harborview.  The container ships and cargo ships are interesting to watch, too.  And of course it’s nice having a chunk of time to just sit…and think about nothing, or everything, or whatever I feel like thinking about in that moment.  Haven’t had an opportunity to do that in a long time.

Today I’m going to meet with someone who is interested in possibly having me run their business.  I would want to run it as a bar…hm…the idea intrigues me, but I don’t know if I’m ready for this again…so soon.  And I’m most definitely not willing to invest any more money into the neighborhood, so the terms would have to be right.  Basically, it would have to be a perfect combination of no financial risk and the potential to have a lot of fun…and get paid a decent amount of money for my time and effort.  “Community Development” is no longer on my radar, frankly.  So we’ll see how the meeting goes.  I have a few ideas as to how I would do this, but I don’t know how I’d fit it into my current work schedule.  GAAAAAAAAAAH.  If it didn’t sound like a great opportunity, I’d walk away — but it does sound good…

I’ll keep you posted.

Employment Is Fun!

So I got the new job and started on Friday.  I like the people…like the location…and the work doesn’t seem terribly frustrating, so I think this is a good thing.  It will be nice to not have to worry about money anymore, and it will be really nice to have my weekends free again.  And paid holidays…and vacation…and sick leave…and insurance…and a retirement account…oh yeah.

Seriously, though — I do miss being the owner of the neighborhood coffeehouse, but hey — you can’t have everything, right?  And it’s nice to get dressed up for work.  No “casual Fridays” either.  So there will be a large amount of shopping at some point — I haven’t had to dress up for work in…oh at least 10 years or so.  Yikes.
