Whew! I’ve never worked so hard to give someone money…
As you may have noticed, the blog has been down for a while. I lost my Visa card and had to report it to the card issuer (and then promptly found it again…dammit) so I couldn’t pay for my hosting. Thankfully I was able to find an alternate payment solution, thanks to the folks in the Godaddy billing department.
All is well.

Except it was three houses. In the neighborhood, on Sargent Street. Some bad photos taken with my phone:

At one point, I counted 11 firefighters on the roof of two houses, trying to put out what was left of the blaze. These photos were taken from the back of a house on James Street — the fire was so hot, the siding on the back of three houses actually melted and buckled.
Apparently one of the houses was being used as a squat by addicts, and the other two were vacant. One had been recently rehabbed and was on the market — hope that guy has insurance.
Never a dull moment here…

I read this article on consumerist.com — wow. Apparently it’s incredibly easy to access someone else’s Sprint account online, by answering a few “security questions” — and you don’t even have to answer correctly. WTF.

Again, thanks to JJT for updating my blog to the new version of WordPress. I HEART WORDPRESS and this new interface. Woot.
So I decided to walk to South Baltimore today…I needed cat food, and since I seem to have misplaced an entire box of clothes…I need to replace all of the missing jeans. So off to Goodwill and Pet Valu I went. The weather was perfect for a really long walk, so that was nice. Being solicited a couple of times on the way (because my outfit of jeans, t-shirt, Crocs, and Whole Foods tote bag scream “hooker”) — that wasn’t so nice.
And I’m not sure if there was a bar crawl going on, but there seemed to be a proliferation of drunk obnoxious men on Fort Avenue. Hi, Mister “BEER PONG KING” T-Shirt Guy — yeah, I’m talking about you. You are an ass. And not particularly attractive. Thanks for offering to show me your “big one”…I’m sure your date was really impressed. Or was that your mother?
Someone dropped a toilet in the middle of Ostend Street — that was pretty damned funny…and then the “PRING WITH JESUS” sign outside the rescue mission elicited a “WTF” from me.
No jeans in my size at the Goodwill. I would have cleaned up, however, if I wore a 22W or a 0. Alas, I ended up with a shirt and a 5 pound bag of cat food from the pet store next door — yeah, it was fun lugging that home. No wonder I’m so sore. Next time I’m grabbing a table at Regi’s and to hell with the cat food. If you ever go to Regi’s, by the way — I highly recommend the Garbage Salad. OMG it’s enough food to feed an army, and oh so delish.
Looking forward to many more days of beautiful weather!

…I am once again able to accept Visa and Mastercard, and I think this solution is effective and secure. I tested it with my Visa, and it looks like it worked. YAY.
I planted flowers in the back patio area, and I want to do some more “landscaping” back there — it’s a really nice place to sit when the weather is nice, and I can’t wait for warm sunny weather. I also brought my grill over from the old house, so I’m closer to having that party I mentioned before. Mmm….BBQ.
Here’s to spring and summer!
Oh — I’m also baking banana bread tonight. And jam — strawberry jam and black cherry jam. Mmm.

Haven’t written anything of substance in ages — sorry for that. Been busy with work…and life…and the neighborhood.
Some random updates:
1. I have moved. I now live in the apartment above the cafe — I love being here in the middle of everything, and the space is wonderful. I still have some boxes that need to be unpacked and some that need to be moved to the basement, but I’m otherwise settled in.
2. I’m thinking about having a party. Soon. Stay tuned.
3. I received an email yesterday from someone who was decidedly not happy with me or my cafe. Some of the points were certainly valid, although any time you preface statements with “I hear you don’t like to take advice…” — well, yes I do like advice. Constructive criticism is fine. Ripping me a new one is not. Nor is questioning my commitment to my business or the neighborhood. If you know me well enough to say these things, engage me in an actual conversation, not a one-sided diatribe. But I did appreciate some of what the person had to say, if not the delivery.
4. Looks like Spring is here. Maybe. Time to open the patio soon — I need new plants. Besides herbs (which I plant every year anyway) — I’m looking for some hardy perennials that would do well in a mixed sun/shade area. Suggestions, please?
5. I still haven’t bought any curtains for the apartment. I need to do this. I also need some storage solutions for the bathroom — there’s space under the sink, but that’s about it. Oh and I have one of those things that hooks over the showerhead…but I need more storage. Ideas?
6. I’ve been baking a lot lately — today I have some butterscotch fudge bars — it’s a new recipe…and damn good.
There’s a Pigtown Happy Hour this Friday at Carroll Station.
