If you haven’t been there already and you live in the neighborhood, you have to try Carroll Station. A bar and restaurant, they serve Jamaican and American food, and their drink prices are reasonable. The last time I was there, I had the brown stew fish (whole red snapper, and they have other fish to choose from), the rice & peas, fried plantains, and more than a couple of beers — my tab was no more than $30. The food was authentic (thank GOD for authentic Jamaican food in the neighborhood!!) and the fish was perfectly cooked. The meal came with a salad — I highly recommend the house dressing. Very spicy, and addicting.
It’s a great place to meet your neighbors and have a nice meal/drink at the same time!

One that I do willingly. What have I been doing, you ask? Ah…eating French pastries. Lots of them. I call it “market research”. And it’s been grand…but I’m a little full and logy from all this research. I’m thinking of expanding my offerings at the cafe, and lovely little pastries seemed to fit the bill. Unfortunately, they’re also really expensive pastries…so…hm. Not sure how I’ll work this, but they might show up on the menu from time to time.
In the meantime…I think there’s another eclair that needs to be…researched.

…and my Comcast saga has a near-perfect ending.
The phone works, the TV works, and the internet works. (Wireless works, too — thanks to JJT.)
I say “near-perfect” because it turns out that credit card machines don’t work on a digital phone line. They require an analog line (aka “the regular phone company’s line”). Well we all know how I feel about Verizon these days, so hell will probably freeze over before I ever take them back. We had a bad breakup, and I’m not going back to Verizon. So…I’ll be able to accept credit cards until I figure out a permanent solution, but I’ll have to do the transactions over the phone.
Hopefully my relationship with Comcast will be a long and happy one.

Finally I have TV. Digital. With on-demand, too. Woot. Works great, so I called them and asked to have the phone and internet hooked up as well. They’re supposed to come on Monday…cross your fingers.

Verizon you blow.
Before I get started on my tale of woe with Comcast, I have to mention - there’s a guy outside on the sidewalk yelling “HEY” every two minutes or so. He’s been at it now for about a half hour, and I’m about to dump dirty dishwater on him.
Anyhoo…
So my rosy glow for Comcast wore off. The guy never showed for two appointments, and they’re scheduled to come on Monday. Anyone care to bet on whether they’ll actually show up? I’ve tried so hard to like this company — after all, their ads suggest a certain geek coolness…but no — they’re the same no-show unreliable “we don’t know why your appointment isn’t in the schedule anymore” fucktard cable company they’ve always been. So between Verizon and Comcast, I still have no phone or data network for the cafe, and I haven’t watched TV since Clinton was in the White House. Okay so that’s an exaggeration, but WTF ever. I want my cable, dammit. Connect my shit! I still haven’t watched the Project Runway finale, and I already know who won. This is just so wrong.

…could you go to a coffeehouse, sit next to three Colonial Dames from Mt. Clare and listen to Motorhead at the same time.
And everyone’s fine with everyone else, and the whole thing just works.
