Monday, Monday…

I posted this on the cafe’s blog, but it seems more people I know read this one…so hence the double posts.

I’m thinking about opening again on Mondays. Hopefully I can convince Mandi that being a morning person isn’t that bad, and I can come in for the afternoons. Thoughts?

Oh, and I have to say — a double-shot Americano belongs in a small cup. I’m drinking one now…and while it’s good — I think a 16 oz. cup really needs three shots. I will be correcting this on the menu board tomorrow morning. And if I may be so bold — I really do have the best coffee around. Damn this is good. I don’t usually care for Americanos, but I’m loving the one I’m drinking!

I’ll be open tomorrow, by the way — start off your New Year by suppporting your local coffeehouse, and get rid of that nasty hangover with good coffee and a grilled cheese. Mmmm….

Sorry, Sandra Lee

I’m sitting here watching the Food Network bio of Sandra Lee…and while I still think her cooking is bleh — I feel bad for making fun of her. I had no idea she had such a terrible childhood, jeez. So..sorry, Sandra Lee.

Okay, Let’s Try This Again.

Because obviously it bears repeating.  From the December 21st Blotter:

Shooting // A man, 46, and his wife were walking in the 1100 block of S. Carey St. about 8 p.m. Wednesday when they were stopped by a gunman who demanded their money and valuables. During a struggle with the gunman, the husband was shot in the neck and a hand. The woman was not injured. The victims fled to their house nearby and called 911. The husband was treated at Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The gunman fled with no money or property and was being sought.

If you are approached by a stranger with a gun, who is demanding your valuables, GIVE.  THEM.  UP.  This is the second story I’ve heard about someone struggling with their robber/burglar, and both times, the victim ended up injured — one guy received quite the ass-whipping (and never mind the public humiliation) and now this poor guy was shot.

DO.  NOT.  argue with a robber who is pointing a gun at you.

R.I.P Emeril, Fat America, Happy Farkin’ Holidays

Interesting note on Michael Ruhlman’s blog today — apparently I was one of the few who didn’t know that the Food Network has shitcanned Emeril Live.  Honestly, I can’t say I’m surprised…or sad about it.  Frankly, I found him insufferable and couldn’t watch the show long enough to figure out if he was a decent chef or not.  Given the other drek on the Food Network, I don’t hold out much hope for him.  (With, of course, the exception of Ina Garten, who I adore.)

I did notice that the news sparked an interesting slew of comments on the blog about how Americans have become more “knowledgeable” about food — I wonder if “knowledgeable” is now synonymous with “foodier-than-thou” in certain circles.  Yes, we have access to better food (or should I say…more expensive food) — but as a nation we’re still fat, diabetic, and full of cholesterol.  Who’s eating all this “better” food?  Folks in Manhattan, I guess.

I was ordering groceries today from Peapod, and I was dismayed to see that one tomato was $1.79.  These are winter tomatoes, people.  They’re not even good.  Yet it was $1.79.  I was talking with a customer, and we recalled a time when it was cheaper to eat fresh healthy foods, and processed foods were expensive (which is why my mother rarely bought processed food…not because she was a boring food snob).  Hell, for $1.79, you can buy maybe three off-brand boxes of mac-n-cheez…and maybe have change left over for a Pepsi.  So…that can be dinner for your family of three, or you can split that pithy overpriced bullshit tomato three ways and call it a day.  Now, I’m not advocating either scenario — but really, I’m beginning to see why broke people buy crap and call it groceries.

Yes, I bought the stupid tomato.  Along with $98 worth of other stuff, not a lot of crap, but I did buy French Onion dip and chips.  In our house, it’s a Christmas eve thing to have chip & dip.  We aren’t big into caviar and pate chez Carol.  I can’t stand either, frankly.  I am, however, making cheese fondue…from scratch…which is so good.  Or we might do beef fondue — I guess I’ll have to take a vote.  But I digress…

I’ve decided that as a nation, we’re not really that knowledgeable about food, we’re just bigger assholes when it comes to sitting down to dinner.  Otherwise, we’d be healthier and happier.  So for this holiday season — I wish you both health and happiness, and quit hogging the spray cheez.

A New Year Coming, A New Look For The Blog

Changed a few things around — I’m using the K2 template now, which allows me to display link categories…apparently there’s no easy way to do that using the standard WordPress templates.  Believe me, I searched and came up empty handed many times.

I’ll probably change the header a few times before I come up with one that I want to live with for a while…but for now, it works.

The holiday party photos have been posted to my flickr account – if you have any photos, please send them to me and I’ll include them!  Thanks again to everyone who attended…and special thanks to those who brought me chocolate.  OMG I’m a slut for chocolate these days.  No pun intended.

So There Was A Party Last Night…

…and what a party it was! Woooooo-hoo. It was so great to finally meet ACW and the lovely Mrs. ACW. I have party photos, but I can’t show you ACW. He’s anonymous, you know.  Charissa and Danielle were there, too…and of course JJT.  Lots of fun people, good food, lots of drinks…perhaps too many drinks, but what’s a party without too many drinks??  Oh and of course AH and LF were there….OMG are they gorgeous or what?  I have a strange hankering for falafel now.
Special thanks to Shawn (aka “Rippie”) for setting up and playing host so I could finally go home and change before the party started…and of course thanks (merci bien) to Denis for co-hosting with me.  Somehow I don’t think the Glen Burnie Costco will be the same after our trip there.  (Slim-Jim and bagel dog, cher?)

Thanks to everyone who attended and helped make the evening so incredible.  I can’t remember the last time I had that much fun at a party…

Adventures In OMG WTF-World With The Comptroller’s Office

Because I own a retail establishment, I am required by the state of Maryland to charge my customers sales tax.  Currently, the sales tax here is 5%.  Come January, however, it’s going up to 6%.  Or…sort of.  Here’s just a paragraph from the letter I received about the tax increase:

“On each sale where the taxable price exceeds $1.00, 6 cents on each exact dollar, plus 1 cent if the excess over an exact dollar is at least 1 cent but less than 17 cents; 2 cents if the excess over an exact dollar is at least 17 cents but less than 34 cents; 3 cents if the excess over an exact dollar is at least 34 cents but less than 51 cents; 4 cents if the excess over an exact dollar is at least 51 cents but less than 67 cents; 5 cents if the excess over an exact dollar is at least 67 cents but less than 84 cents; and 6 cents if the excess over an exact dollar is 84 cents.”

Did you follow that?  Because I certainly didn’t.  OMG WTF.

The Day Every Restaurant Owner Dreads and Hopes For…

…at the same time. The day your City Paper review comes out.  Because really, everyone reads the City Paper these days, right?  And the Urbanite…

So here’s what the City Paper had to say about my cafe.  I’m so excited I could just cry.
