Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow…

I’ve been surprised over the past few weeks to see so many police officers in the neighborhood — and it looks like they’re actually making arrests. Disrupting the normal ebb and flow. Which is kind of nice, but I can’t help but wonder if it will all go away once the mayor’s race is over. Is this for real, or just a show to make us think our interim mayor is capable of doing something productive? (Which, if you’re wondering, I don’t believe.)

And what makes this even better — the normal officers I’m used to seeing can’t stand and don’t trust at all are nowhere to be found. These are new officers, most of them, and they seem to be on top of things. It’s wonderful, but I can’t help but feel a little bittersweet about it…because I’m counting down the days until the 11th and wondering when we’ll go back to business as usual in Pigtown.

Why I’ll Probably Vote For Keiffer Mitchell

I really hate voting for the “candidate who offends me the least” — it’s not a confident way to go to the polls. And I find myself voting that way more and more as the years go by — I haven’t felt good about my chosen candidate since maybe Reagan. And let’s just not go there right now.

Baltimore’s mayoral race is a tough one. Honestly, I don’t know anything about most of the candidates. They’ve never made much of an attempt to get to know me, either. Same with most of the city council candidates (with the exception of William Cole, a good friend and solid citizen — at least that vote I can feel good about!) The sad thing is that small business owners have a lot of influence over who wins elections. We’re able to campaign, even in subtle ways, day in and day out. People (right or wrong) put a lot of stock in who we choose, because our customers generally share the same worldview as we do — otherwise, they wouldn’t be customers. So it would have made sense for the candidates to approach me and other resident business owners in my neighborhood…and most of them either never bothered, or they made such a halfassed presentation, there’s no way in hell I’d publicly (or even privately) support them. Keiffer Mitchell included.

But I’m still probably going to vote for Keiffer, for one reason. His crime fighting plan is focused on crime and punishment — not “community groups”. Baltimore has an inordinate amount of “community groups”, most of which do nothing beyond justifying their existence by keeping neighborhoods at the status quo. Partnering with “community leaders” — supposedly the city government has been doing that all along, right? So…what failed, and when?

As a business owner, I claim a small ownership of the label “community leader” — not because of anything I’ve done, but for the simple fact that I’m a visible and vocal part of my neighborhood. I don’t want or need to partner with the police. They don’t need my input or help — and God help them if it’s come to that. They need the help and support of the mayor and city council in the form of appropriate pay, tax benefits, and the simple ability to do their job. I know quite a few police officers, and their number-one complaint is that they feel defeated by the fact that if they arrest someone, they know that nine times out of ten, the criminal will either go free that very day, or the crime will most likely result in probation after a few days in jail and before a judge and prosecutors who don’t give a damn. When the criminals are safe in knowing they can run ripshod over communities and get away with it — what the hell can the police do?

I honestly think Keiffer Mitchell will make a decent effort at making this city safer by focusing on arrests and prosecution. We don’t need more “community groups” — we need to know that someone in charge gives a damn about keeping us safe.

Elections: A Race or About Race?

From today’s Examiner:

In January, defense attorney Warren Brown sent a letter to all six black candidates urging them to coalesce around one person. Brown was concerned too many black candidates splitting the black vote would encourage a white candidate to run and win, a scenario that failed to materialize.

But Conaway said he was now concerned about the race for City Council president, which pits two black candidates, City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and City Councilman Kenneth Harris Sr., against white candidate Michael Sarbanes.

“The president of the City Council race is so important, we must come to some consensus on that, and we should be leaning toward one of the African-American candidates,” he said.

God forbid we should vote based on whether the person is qualified?

Update: Considering that Warren Brown is moving out of the city because we’ve had too many murders for his liking…I think he especially needs to not worry about who wins our elections. Really. When you turn tail and run, you give up your right to influence elections. And we certainly don’t need his influence.

True Confessions

Okay I’ll admit it. I think it would be absolutely the biggest thrill to kick in a bad guy’s door, yell “FREEZE MOTHAFU**AHS, GET DOWN ON THE GROUND” while brandishing a loaded SG-551-SWAT.

Yes, I’m watching “Dallas SWAT”. There’s just something about that show, jeez. I need to lay off the caffeine, maybe.

Sometimes It’s Better To Just STFU.

Hey Stephon Marbury. If you enjoy playing for the Knicks…shut it. Nobody with half a brain would stand behind Michael Vick and say it’s no big deal that he tortured dogs. Nobody. Dogfighting is not a sport — it’s cruelty to animals, period. Hunters usually eat what they shoot - so unless you’re sitting in Michael Vick’s house chowing down on some pit bull burgers, you’re an ass.

Stay Home Next Time!

Interesting way to end the day at the cafe.

Junkie and three friends pull up in front of the Shop & Go across from my cafe. This is the third time I’ve seen them today, and it’s pretty obvious from the looks of them that they’re coming into the neighborhood to buy heroin. This time, however, the police pull them over just as they’re driving away. Uh-oh…

The driver and one passenger were led away in handcuffs…in the back of a paddy wagon. Score one for Baltimore City Police! Usually there’s a big show — lots of cops, lots of people sitting on the ground…yet everyone’s let go. This time two people were taken to Central Booking, and that’s worth something. It absolutely infuriates me that people from other neighborhoods come to Pigtown to buy drugs — from as far away as Harford County, DC, and even further, probably. Maybe if they spent a little time in the city’s jails they’d think twice.

And by the way, if you own a Nissan Sentra, silver, late model with an Area 8 parking sticker, DO NOT come back to Pigtown. You stay in your own neighborhood — surely they have drugs wherever you live. Fucktard.

Wanted: Businesses

I was thinking the other day — there are so many available commercial spaces in Pigtown, what kinds of businesses could fill them? Come on you guys — I can’t be just one out of a small handful of people who want to invest here!

So here’s a list of things I’d like to see along the boulevard, hey a girl can dream…:

  • Yoga studio/gym
  • Functional supermarket that caters to all residents, i.e., Shoppers, SuperFresh, a clean Safeway…we could also accomplish this by putting pressure on the management of our existing Safeway.
  • Hip fun clothing store — maybe something like a cross between DoubleDutch in Hampden and Cupcake in Fells Point. Love both of those stores.
  • A good ethic restaurant. Thai, Middle Eastern, or Japanese would be nice. Somewhere you can sit down and have a nice dinner without breaking the bank. A place that doesn’t primarily do a carry-out business.
  • Nicer liquor/wine store. Maybe a place that also sells cheese and other yummies.
  • A farmer’s market. The Save-A-Lot parking lot would be ideal for this. It would also be a great place for me to buy produce and cheese for the restaurant, as most of the local farmers don’t like to deliver to Pigtown, sadly. The market would be for farmers only, though. No wholesalers selling crap produce out of a Dole carton.
  • A fun furniture store — something like Home On The Harbor in Federal Hill. Some of their stuff is pretty reasonable!
  • Lawyers, doctors (I should say…doctors who actually see patients instead of dispensing shady Workman’s Comp claim letters), accountants, architects — we need more professional services, less social services. Word to your mother.
  • A florist. Something fun, not your standard ferns-and-carnations FTD drek florist.
  • A record/sheet music/CD store — maybe one that specialises in local/indie music.
  • An art gallery, again — one that focuses on local/regional artists.
  • A bookstore
  • Come on people, seriously. Nobody wants to do any of this in our neighborhood? Hm. I know most of you have regular jobs, which is great — but there has to be someone out there who’s willing to put their money where their incessant complaints are mouth is and invest in the community. Otherwise — why do you live here?

    I’ve Fallen And I Can’t Get Up!

If you’ve noticed that your blog is no longer on my blogroll, don’t panic. I moved a bunch of food and restaurant-related blogs to my cafe’s website. The plan is to start blogging about more than just the weekly specials…we’ll see how that goes.

In the meantime, I’ll keep ranting about Baltimore, and sharing the Pigtown love over here. :-)
